not the first...

Not surprisingly, I'm not the first to see Neverwhere as a critique and commentary on the policies of the Thatcher era: when I googled "neverwhere thatcherite britain" it was everywhere on the internet. So I guess I will have to give up any thoughts of original brilliance and settle for the pleasure of a commonly held insight.
This did make me think about cultural context though - seeing fictional works against the backdrop of history and society. High fantasy sometimes seems quite removed from what's going on in the world (although I don't think that's true), but urban fantasy, by virtue of having contemporary settings is harder to view in isolation.
